Fake News

FAKE NEWS is everywhere, and I don’t mean to clone Donald’s favourite line but it is, especially when it comes to dieting.

As soon as you mention to someone you are on a diet everyone becomes an expert. Your mate, auntie, the dudes at work, they all have the secret of what either worked for them, or someone they know.

The problem with all of this information is 2 fold.

  1. People assume that what worked for one, will work for all
  2. They believe everything they read or are told.

That was especially true through the 80’s when there were a load of dieting dogmas that kind of became the ‘truth’ because people thought they sounded logical, so therefore must be true.

  • Dont eat late at night or it turns to fat
  • Don’t skip a meal or you will store fat in starvation mode
  • Don’t eat fat cos fat makes you fat
  • Eat every 3 hours to keep the metabolism burning
  • etc etc

Then everyone saw sense. they started doing studies, researching and verifying the theories and BAM, turns out most of it was bollocks!

However these theories still persist, understandably so, and now to make things worse there are loads of new theories that are readily accessible to everyone because of social media.

The dieting industry is HUGE, massive amounts of money, primarily in supplements, and it’s compounded by the fact the the public are always looking for the quick fix, the magic pill.

Industry ‘people’ capitalise on this and try to complicate stuff, lead you to believe that this little trick or tweak or body type or whatever is what YOU need to do, and indeed is the ONLY WAY you should do it, to lose weight.

They play on the ignorance and lack of knowledge of the general public and milk the desperation most people have.

When you are bombarded with advice and media studies and you read something in a magazine, or see an expert tell you that you MUST do this, or DON’T do that just remember TWO THINGS:

  1. To lose weight you HAVE to eat less calories than your body burns and
  2. You have to do that consistently.

That’s it. Fully supported by science and real world results. It’s not in question, or up for debate. THAT IS IT.

Everything else you see and read is NOT magical, not miraculous, they have not found some way to defy the laws of science.

The ONLY VARIABLE in your entire dieting journey is finding the way for you to be able to be consistent. ANYONE can eat less food, thats ridiculously simple. Doing it consistently is the problem.

Don’t be drawn into this pill, or this body type, or this dieting method or whatever. When you hear of someone who did AMAZING on such and such a diet, or following such and such a strategy, or taking such and such supplement the ONLY reason they lost weight doing it is because they consistently created a calorie deficit. That is it.

Listen to everything everyone has to say, but always, especially coming from me, be sceptical of it and question it, and always remember, even if you keep it to yourself, that weight loss is NOT complicated (only requires those 2 things) and there is NO short cut or magical fix.

Once you realise and believe that, it’s simply down to the nitty gritty of doing it, and not being distracted.
